We constantly project into the future.We can't help it; that's part of what makes us human. Our frontal lobes - the area of the brain right behind the forehead - constantly thinks about the future. Creating, reviewing, rehearsing, and discarding various scenarios about what will happen. (And what won't happen...) "What's gonna happen?" "What's gonna happen? ""What's gonna happen?" Projecting into the future rates as normal, healthy, human behavior. If - If we're projecting positive, healthy thoughts and feelings. All too often, however, those projections are NOT based on positive, optimistic thoughts. Rather, they consist of quite negative ones. According to the world's foremost expert on optimism, Dr. Martin Seligman, everyone is born optimistic. And yet, 95% of grownups are pessimists, not optimists. What goes wrong? What turns youthful optimism into grown-up pessimism - and so often cynicism as well? The answer consists of two words - pain and shame.As a youth, every human experiences pain and shame. It's an unavoidable part of the heritage of today's society. Maybe the pain and shame were severe, maybe not. A tender young seedling can be crushed (or deformed) much more easily than a full-grown tree. It doesn't take a lot of abuse - or neglect - to produce a lifetime of damage. The nature of shame involves passing it on from one generation to the next. The worthlessness, the 'dirtiness', the rage that I feel becomes like a hot potato and I find myself compelled to pass it on - and always to someone weaker than me. Just like the worthlessness, the 'dirtiness', and the rage were given to me by my parents so I must pass it on to my kids. And thus begins the warping, the twisting, the distorting, of my youthful optimism into the grown-up pessimism. Shame involves a lot more, but you get the idea. It's not biological. It's not genetic. It's part of the heritage. One of the end results of shame is that I become pessimistic and often times cynical as well. However, instead of calling it 'pessimism'. I call it 'intelligence'. "It won't work. That's a stupid idea." "It'll never fly.” "You can't do that." "Nobody's gonna get the best of me! I'm too smart!" I call it ‘street smarts’ as I really become too LAZY to do the work of evaluating. Thinking and feeling is hard work. Cynicism and judgments, however, seem to come with almost no effort at all. Instead of exerting the effort to carefully evaluate a situation, I become blinded by my own pessimism. I become cynical of everything but my own cynicism. (And I must never, ever, ever question my own assumptions!) 95% of the population finds itself in this boat without even realizing it. Of course, very few people label themselves as pessimistic. In fact, we like to think of ourselves as open-minded optimists. Why the misconception? Maybe we just don't understand the value and significance of optimism. Maybe we don’t see how important it really is. The Value Of Optimism. One study stands out as perhaps the best scientific exploration of optimism - C. Peterson, M. Seligman, and G. Vaillant, "Pessimistic Explanatory Style as a Risk Factor for Physical Illness: A Thirty-five Year Longitudinal Study", J Person Soc Psych 55 (1988): 23-7. Three main discoveries came out of this classic paper thirty five years in the making: 1. Optimists live longer than pessimists. 2. Optimists suffer from fewer and less severe diseases. 3. Optimists are much healthier than pessimists. Besides these obvious health benefits, optimism also implies a higher quality of life. Quality of life - manifested as greater success, greater happiness and greater love. A life of accomplishment. A life lived full and rich. A life worth living. A life you can be proud of. A life you can sink your teeth into. These are some of the benefits of being an optimist. Improving your optimism rates as one of the most important actions you can take to improve your life. It doesn't come automatically, though. It takes effort. It takes deliberate, conscious awareness of your thoughts and feelings. And then acting on that awareness. Here’s one starting point: Practice your ‘possibility thinking’ and your ‘possibility feeling’. Give yourself permission to think new thoughts and feel new feelings. “Hey, wouldn’t it be great if I got that promotion at work?” And when the negativity creeps in - “Get real. You know it’ll never happen.” Just answer it - “Yeah, but what if it did?” “Well, it probably won’t.” “Yeah but what if it did?” And stick with it. You can always outlast that negative voice inside, if you want to. You can always get in the last word. Try it with one thing in your life. Then try it with another. Anything I missed?Seizing an Opportunity – David Brown was a mortician. He and my great-uncles ran the funeral home in Red Deer, Alberta. Being a very creative man by nature, he felt that there must be something that could be done with all the embalming fluid bottles that went to waste in funeral homes. Call him a re-cycler or environmentalist before his time, he saw within this problem, an opportunity.Is there an opportunity that others in your field are missing?Something Unique – I wish I could tell you how he came up with the idea of using the embalming fluid bottles to build his retirement home, but I haven’t a clue. The how doesn’t really matter. What does is that he came up with something very unique. A dwelling that, to this day, over 50 years later, still attracts the attention of passers by to the point that they will stop and spend some time to have a closer look.Finding your difference in the marketplace is essential for long term success and can save you a fortune in lost revenues and unnecessary promotional costs. Planning – My grandfather spent a lot of time planning his development. He required approximately 500,000 bottles for a start. Additionally he knew he would need to test how the bottles would stand up to heat in the summer and cold in the winter. So the experiments began. Mini structures were built and heated, others were built and frozen. Finally he found the right combination of bottles and mortar that would work.It’s common to think things out at 50,000 feet. But attention to detail and planning for eventualities is worth its weight in gold. Location – David Brown knew that his structure couldn’t withstand Alberta winters. He also needed a location where the building would experience very little shifting. So he chose a piece of bedrock in the milder climate of BC as the final destination for his glass house. This piece of bedrock happened to be located on a major thoroughfare to Vancouver in its day, so the traffic was tremendous! They say in marketing only 3 things really matter – location, location, location. Look at your business at the moment, is it possible that better positioning or a different distribution channel could be what you really need to achieve success?Hard Work – There is a great picture of David Brown at the Glass House. He is sitting down and on the bottom of his shoe is very big hole. He didn’t sit down very often (a trait my mother definitely inherited). He worked hard. He was not a builder, nor was he an architect. He was a mortician, but he built a large majority of the house by himself. It took simple "grit."What else can I say about this? Chances are you already know that being a business owner is a lot harder than working for someone else. The good news is hard work WILL pay off!Vision, Patience, Passion and Determination – Across the road from the glass house is the side of a hill. David used to sit up there, sometimes for hours and simply imagine what his final dwelling would look like. His plans came from this vision and his vision came from his passion and the end result came from his patience and the determination to see that final outcome. Even after the house was completed, he continued to add to his dream.When the going gets rough, there can be times when the only thing that keeps us on track to success is our vision, patience, passion and determination that what we are doing is the right choice.Know When You Need Outside Help – While my grandfather was comfortable in building the external structure, he was not going to chance the electrical, plumbing or stone work to his own volition. It was in areas like these that he called in the experts. Do you know when you need external help and do you know the right talent to bring in?Savvy Business Sense – While my grandfather was building the house, curious passers by stopped to see the odd structure. If you go, you will see notes inside some of the bottles that people left as the house was being built. In a way the glass house is like a big time bottle. Eventually the traffic became so much that David Brown decided to start charging for visits. Being that the house was on a major road, the revenue became enough for a sustainable business. Soon thereafter, he moved to a house next door, and turned his masterpiece into a tourist attraction. His unique product was featured in an Architectural Magazine and other publications and of course it continued to attract the attention of passers by. David began working on the grounds to enhance the experience, until he passed away in the early 70’s. Sometimes success can be as easy as simply re-writing your business plan, raising your prices or changing up your marketing strategy? What can you do to improve your business processes?Succession Planning – Before he passed away, David Brown offered the business to his children. As I mentioned earlier, Eldon and his wife Diane have been running it ever since. Learning self-command is the key to harnessing the power of your action. If you invest in your ability to take action your return on your investment will be success. I have often talked to clients who find they want to accomplish a desired goal that will move them further in their business, life or health and yet they do not seem to be able to get started or continue. Some of the people I have spoke with start a goal, get half way there and stop. They have told me that they have had this habit for most of their lives. Whatever you are saying to yourself is key because when you say something to yourself you create a chemical cocktail that gets poured into your systems and your body and mind begin to feel the effects of what you are telling yourself. You either feel empowered or impaired.For instance if you are saying to yourself, "I don’t know what to do, I don’t know where to look" "I don’t know how to fix this," all of these statements shut your drive and your enthusiasm down. These are chemicals you expose yourself too from your thinking process. They do not enhance brain function or drive the solution driven part of your being. Your action ability automatically gets dampened. When you begin retraining your brain to empower your action, you will learn to have more success because you will be investing in your actions with self-command. When you use self-command you become aware of what you are saying to yourself. You do not just let any old thought occupy your thinking. You examine that thought and determine if it is beneficial to you, your body and the project you want to complete.
